Figure Skating Terms

USFSA
The United States Figure Skating Association is the governing body for the sport of figure skating in the United States. ISI

Moves in the Field
Moves in the field testing has been set up by the United States Figure Skating Association as a tool to create strength in stroking, develop footwork and increase power. The focus is on power, edge quality, extension and quickness.

Jumping Fundamentals
There are two types of jumps in figure skating, edge jumps and toe jumps. The edge jumps are the waltz/axel, salchow, loop, walley and inside axel. The toe jumps are the toe-loop (toe walley), flip and lutz. The set-up and step into the jump are the most critical aspects for success. Lift into the air before rotation begins. Keep all jumps moving down ice.

Choreography on Ice
Expressive way to skate to music that tells a story or feeling, including jumps, spins, footwork, stroking, spirals, and ina's. Involves using arms, legs and facial expression to cover the ice and change direction. Use of choreography is entertaining and makes every figure skater unique.

Judging a Program
There are two sets of marks (scores) Judge's use. The Technical Merit Mark is based on the following:
  1. Difficulty of the performance
  2. Variety
  3. Speed
  4. Sureness and cleanness of program

The Presentation Mark is based on the following:
  1. Conformity with music
  2. Variation of speed
  3. Covering the ice surface
  4. Sureness in time to music
  5. Style and carriage
  6. Originality
  7. Expression
